The Road to Guantanamo

YOU MUST WATCH THIS!!!

Bush officials draft law to protect administration from war crimes

President George W. Bush's administration drafted amendments to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect policymakers from criminal charges for authorizing any humiliating or degrading treatment of prisoners, lawyers who have seen the proposal said.
The move by the administration is the latest effort to deal with treatment of those taken into custody in the war on terror.
At issue are interrogations carried out by the CIA and the degree to which harsh tactics such as water-boarding were authorized by administration officials. A separate law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, applies to the military.

you've got to be kidding me.....how the hell can they do this.......and why the hell doesn't anyone stand up to them!!!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The White House, without elaboration, said in a statement the bill “will apply to any conduct by any U.S. personnel, whether committed before or after the law is enacted.”
One of the two lawyers said the draft is in the revision stage but the administration seems intent on pushing forward the draft's major points in Congress after Labour Day.
“I think what this bill can do is in effect immunize past crimes. That's why it's so dangerous,” said a third lawyer, Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice.
Mr. Fidell said the initiative is “not just protection of political appointees but also CIA personnel who led interrogations.”
Interrogation practices “follow from policies that were formed at the highest levels of the administration,” said a fourth lawyer, Scott Horton, who has followed detainee issues closely.
“The administration is trying to insulate policymakers under the War Crimes Act.”
A White House spokesman said Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions includes a number of “vague terms” that are susceptible to different interpretations.

The administration believes it is very important to bring clarity to the War Crimes Act so those on the frontlines in the war on terror “have clear rules that are defined in law,” said the White House spokesman.

yeah I bet

fucking bush....makes the laws, breaks the laws and then reforms the laws

WHAT A DOUCHE

Qana killings could breach world law: UN

United Nations, Aug 9: Israel's deadly attack on the Lebanese village of Qana could be part of a "pattern of violations of international law", UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said, calling for a more comprehensive investigation into the July 30 bombardment.

Annan made his assessment in a letter to the Security Council calling for more information on the attack.

"The attack on Qana should be seen in the broader context of what could be, based on preliminary information available to the UN, including eyewitness accounts, a pattern of violations of international law, including international humanitarian law, committed during the course of the current hostilities," he said.

"I have repeatedly condemned all actions that target civilians and I again call on all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and, in particular, to take all necessary precautions to spare civilian life and property." Expressing distress at the "tragic events" in Qana and the overall effect of the conflict on the civilian populations of both Israel and Lebanon, Annan said it was a "level of seriousness that requires further gathering of information, including violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law."

Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: Media & the Israel-Palestine Conflict

I watched an incredibly disturbing video last night, Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land, and I just thought I'd share it with all of you. The video is similar to my previous post about censorship in America about the mideast crisis, in fact it even includes many of the same excerpts. The difference however is this one is an hour and 20 minutes and goes extremely in depth. It was concise and easy to understand......I definitely recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand the basic facts of the Israeli\Palestinian conflict. It is however also a documentary that should be viewed by every American and Canadian alike, regardless how educated they are on the matter. Lesson to be learned (among many): don't believe everything you see on TV!!!

Watch above or at your own convenience here

UPDATE: the above video is not working at the moment....but since i have no life, I'm slaving away trying to fix it. Until then, you can click here to watch

Ann Coulter

born December 8, 1961, New York City) is an American author, columnist, and pundit. She frequently appears on television, radio, and as a speaker at public and private events

I'll let this broad speak for herself

Particularly in response to the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Coulter has been notably critical of Arabs and Muslims. For example, in a column written on September 12, 2001, (a day after her friend, Barbara Olson, was killed in the attacks), she wrote,
"Airports scrupulously apply the same laughably ineffective airport harassment to Suzy Chapstick as to Muslim hijackers. It is preposterous to assume every passenger is a potential crazed homicidal maniac. We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

Later, she advocated the use of racial profiling by airlines as a means to further target Arabs and Muslims in particular. She wrote in her column that she had reviewed the civil rights lawsuits against certain airlines to determine which airlines had subjected Arabs to the most, "egregious discrimination," so that she could fly only that airline. She also said that the airline should be bragging instead of denying any of the charges of discrimination brought against them. In an interview with the British Guardian newspaper, she quipped, "I think airlines ought to start advertising: 'We have the most civil rights lawsuits brought against us by Arabs.'" When asked what Muslims should do for travel, she responded that they, "could use flying carpets."

One comment that drew particularly harsh criticism, both from college student bloggers as well as fellow conservatives, was at a Conservative Political Action Conference, where she stated, "I think our motto should be, post-9-11: raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.

In her book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, Coulter criticizes the four 9/11 widows known as the "Jersey Girls", writing that they abused their status as widows by acting as partisans to push for the 9/11 Commission, to harshly criticize the G.W. Bush administration and its security policies, and to campaign for presidential candidate John Kerry. The purportedly partisan activities of the, "Jersey Girls" have also been commented upon by other observers.

The reaction to Coulter's more recent comments from her book Godless invoked heated responses; In it Coulter wrote: These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. ... I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much ... the Democrat ratpack gals endorsed John Kerry for president ... cutting campaign commercials... how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

And to complete my point.......

Montreal March For Mideast Peace

Jewish and Muslim Canadians along with Quebec politicians marched through the streets of Montreal on Sunday, calling for an end to the war in the Middle East.

Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss carried the lead banner and walked with Imam Sayed Nabil Abbas, leading the 15,000 people in a peaceful demonstration.

"The Muslim countries and our cousins have shown us for hundreds of years, we always have coexisted in harmony," Weiss said.

If you get a chance watch the entire clip. There's an interesting speech at the end from a representative of the Jewish Hasidic community.

this is why i love montreal.....we are everyday living proof that people from all over the world, with different religions, cultures, and beliefs can live in peace. nuff said

US court hears Iraq rape case

Am I the only one who only heard about this a few days ago??? Hmmm American censorship again? First of all I am completely disgusted, but not surprised. If any of you are like me and have no idea about the facts of this case, read below:

An Iraqi army medic has described a scene of horror to a US military hearing that will decide if four soldiers are to be court-martialled for the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and the killing of her family.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Home of Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi. Source: cnn

The medic, who was not named, said that when he entered the house in Mahmudiya on March 12, he found 14-year-old Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi naked with her legs spread and burned from the waist up, with a single bullet wound beneath her left eye.

He also told the hearings on Sunday that he had found her six-year-old sister in an adjacent room with the back of her head blown out, and the bodies of both parents riddled with bullets. Four serving soldiers - Sergeant Paul Cortez, Specialist James Barker, Private Jesse Spielman and Private Bryan Howard - are charged with conspiring to rape the teenager.

unimaginable.....it's very scary to hear about atrocities being committed by US soldiers, but what's really scary is the things that we don't hear about and probably never will.

They could face the death penalty if found guilty. [A] fifth soldier, Sergeant Anthony Yribe, is charged with failing to report the attack but is not alleged to have taken part. The Article 32 hearing will decide if there is enough evidence to start a court martial for the five soldiers.

and because it's important to know.....

The Iraqi authorities identified the rape victim as Abeer Qassim Hamza. The other victims were her father, Qassim Hamza; her mother, Fikhriya Taha; and her sister, Hadeel Qassim Hamza.

and to sum things up....

The case is one of five serious crimes allegedly carried out by US soldiers that are being investigated by the military.

Study Claims Link Between Raunchy Lyrics and Teen Sex

I hate when they do these studies.....you can find links between anything but some researchers take a relationship between two variables and turn it into a cause and effect type deal. Anyway let's take a look at the article....

Whether it's hip-hop, rap, pop or rock, much of popular music aimed at teens contains sexual overtones. Its influence on their behavior appears to depend on how the sex is portrayed, researchers found.

Songs depicting men as "sex-driven studs," women as sex objects and with explicit references to sex acts are more likely to trigger early sexual behavior than those where sexual references are more veiled and relationships appear more committed, the study found.

just an idea, but what if it's the parents? I mean perhaps kids who don't listen to "raunchy" songs, don't because their parents won't allow them.....maybe they're strict.....and I'm sure it's not just in the music department either, but strict in all areas of life....not listening to dirty music and not having sex may just be a result of strict parents.....anyway my point is there are a million different ways to explain the connection. Anywho there's more.....

Teens who said they listened to lots of music with degrading sexual messages were almost twice as likely to start having intercourse or other sexual activities within the following two years as were teens who listened to little or no sexually degrading music.

Among heavy listeners, 51 percent started having sex within two years, versus 29 percent of those who said they listened to little or no sexually degrading music.

51 percent of heavy listeners started having sex within two years!?! I thought 50 % of teens were having sex anyway?

I once had this friend in high school....she came from a super conservative, super religious family. She listened to country music, never any "sexually charged" rap or hip-hop music, and by god she was the biggest slut I ever met! just goes to show....

oh by the way, I also want to do my part to corrupt the youth of today, so here's a classic going out to all those fornicating teens

the song may be a censored version....but we all know what the real lyrics are

Pat Robertson

America's favorite televangelist! Here's a little background info from Wikipedia:

Marion Gordon "Pat" Robertson (born March 22, 1930) is a conservative televangelist from the United States. He is the founder of numerous organizations and corporations, including the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), the Christian Coalition, Flying Hospital, International Family Entertainment, Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation, and Regent University. He is the host of The 700 Club, a Christian TV program airing on channels throughout the United States and on CBN affiliates worldwide.

and here is why Pat is the ignorant ass that he is......

Among his more controversial statements, Robertson has described feminism as a "socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." Many of Robertson's views mirror those of the evangelical activist Jerry Falwell, who has made frequent appearances on The 700 Club. He agreed with Falwell when Falwell stated that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were caused by "pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, the ACLU and the People for the American Way."

On the June 8, 1998 edition of his show, Robertson denounced Orlando, Florida and Disney World for allowing a privately sponsored "Gay Days" weekend. Robertson stated that the acceptance of homosexuality could result in hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, terrorist bombings and "possibly a meteor." The resulting outcry prompted Robertson to return to the topic on June 24, where he quoted the Book of Revelation to support his claims.

On his November 10, 2005 broadcast of The 700 Club, Robertson told citizens of Dover, Pennsylvania that they had rejected God by voting out of office all seven members of the school board who support "intelligent design."
"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city", Robertson said on his broadcast.
"And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there"

During a 1995 taping of The 700 Club, he called the religion a "Christian heresy". During a September 19, 2002 episode of FOX News Channel's Hannity & Colmes, Robertson claimed that the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, was "an absolute wild-eyed fanatic. a robber and a brigand." He claimed on the September 14, 2004 episode of The 700 Club that "Islam is by the gun, by the fire, by the bayonet, by the torch."On the July 14, 2005 broadcast of the The 700 Club, he claimed that "Islam, at its core, teaches violence."

in his book The New World Order he wrote: "When I said during my presidential bid that I would bring only Christians and Jews into the government, I hit a firestorm. 'What do you mean?' the media challenged me. 'You're not going to bring atheists into the government? How dare you maintain that those who believe in the Judeo-Christian values are better qualified to govern America than Hindus and Muslims?' My simple answer is, 'Yes, they are."

Oh my.....it amazes me that these insane, prejudice, preacher types really believe they are living in the so called image of God. Doesn't God teach us to love ALL of our brothers and sisters?

anyway he's old.....he'll probably kick the bucket in a few....hopefully

i kid i kid

Half of U.S. still believes Iraq had WMD

I choked on my coffee when I read this headline from the Associated press.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Some interesting quotes from the article:

After a 16-month, $900-million-plus investigation, the U.S. weapons hunters known as the Iraq Survey Group declared that Iraq had dismantled its chemical, biological and nuclear arms programs in 1991 under U.N. oversight. That finding in 2004 reaffirmed the work of U.N. inspectors who in 2002-03 found no trace of banned arsenals in Iraq.

Despite this, a Harris Poll released July 21 found that a full 50 percent of U.S. respondents — up from 36 percent last year — said they believe Iraq did have the forbidden arms when U.S. troops invaded in March 2003, an attack whose stated purpose was elimination of supposed WMD

"As perception grows of worsening conditions in Iraq, it may be that Americans are just hoping for more of a solid basis for being in Iraq to begin with," said the Harris Poll's David Krane.

So.....What does Hezbollah have to say about all of this?

The video is of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah apparently from Aug. 3rd. Basically He blames the United States for intentionally stopping cease-fire efforts and calls upon all "honorable men" to stand up to the current American Administration.

First Outgames A Success

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The Worlds first Outgames have come to a close here in Montreal and by all accounts it was a huge success (despite some reports of low attendance). The games brought people from all over the world together to celebrate pride, equality, and human rights. One of the biggest contributions to the Outgames was the International Conference on LGBT Human Rights.

The "Declaration of Montreal" was presented during the closing luncheon of the Conference and according to montreal2006.org....

The goal is to present this Declaration to the United Nations and to national governments, in order to mobilize unequivocal support for LGBT rights

This declaration was also read during the Opening Ceremonies of the Outgames by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Mark Tewksbury and legendary tennis champion Martina Navratilova.

It was the Largest Conference of its kind ever held.

Plan B Gets a Second Chance

Okay.....this ongoing battle in the United States over whether or not Plan B (the morning after pill) should be available without prescription has me confused. Has the scientific evidence not shown that it is safe and effective? Does the Bush administration think that women are complete idiots? That we are not capable of taking two pills in one day?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

In Canada if one wishes to obtain the morning after pill, all they need to do is go into a Pharmacy and speak with the pharmacist. It costs anywhere from $15 - $30 and directions on how to take the pill and it's possible side effects are clearly explained to the customer before the transaction is completed.

Safe, economical, and non-invasive.......and I certainly don't see debauchery and immorality running over into the streets.

Here are some facts about Plan B or EBC (Emergency Birth Control) as presented by emergencybirthcontrol.org

Widespread use of EBC could prevent 1.7 million unintended pregnancies and 800,000 abortions each year in the United States alone.

EBC does not cause an abortion.

EBC pills contain exactly the same drugs and work in exactly the same way as regular birth control pills.

EBC cannot terminate a pregnancy that has already begun.

A woman doesn't become pregnant until 5-7 days after having sex. EBC works after a woman has sex but before she becomes pregnant.

EBC pills can be taken up to 3 days after having unprotected sex, not just on the morning after.

EBC pills are up to 89% percent effective if taken within 3 days after having unprotected sex, and up to 95 % effective if taken within 24 hours. On average, for every 100 women who use EBC only 1 will become pregnant.

Medical science defines the beginning of pregnancy as the successful implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. Medication that works before pregnancy begins is by definition not abortive.

EBC pills can have side effects including nausea, vomiting, headache, irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, and abdominal cramping.

EBC pills are safe for most women to use and have no long-term negative effects.

Here's a small run down from wikipedia about the controversy in the United States

On December 16, 2003, an advisory committee to the FDA recommended that Plan B be made available over the counter. The committee voted 23 to 4 to recommend Plan B be switched from prescription to OTC (over the counter) status. The committee unanimously voted 28 to 0 that the data demonstrated Plan B was safe for use in an OTC setting, and unanimously voted 28 to 0 that there was not evidence that OTC availability of Plan B leads to substitution of emergency contraception for regular use of other contraceptive methods.

However, in May of 2004 the FDA refused this strong recommendation and prohibited over-the-counter sale. The FDA claimed that this was due to limited experimental data on the effects of such pills on girls under 16 years of age, but critics have accused the FDA of basing the decision on political pressure.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Since December 2000, the official policy of the American Medical Association (AMA) has been to support Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of over-the-counter (OTC) access to emergency contraception without a prescription in the U.S. The AMA, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other leading U.S. medical organizations have passed resolutions and petitioned the FDA to allow OTC access

It's really a shame that this is still an issue.

I came across an article from the
Sentinel & Enterprise that caught my attention. It starts out....

The possibility of having emergency contraception available without a prescription has Gail Frieburger confused.

"I believe in a woman's right to choose, but at the same time," Frieburger trails off and looks at her 10-year-old daughter who stands near her looking perplexed.

Is it just me or would you rather see a 12 or 13 year old girl take a pill or knocked-up? Which of the two do you think is more traumatic for a young girl? Thoughts anyone?

and to be fair the article does go on to explain key points on both sides of the issue. I especially enjoyed what Father Dennis Bradley had to say

"I think if people have more options to contraceptives they will probably have more sex,"

hmmm.....I doubt it considering there are 6 billion people on earth........mankind seems to have plenty of sex without the aid of contraceptives.

American Censorship of the Lebanese/Israeli Conflict

Sitting over here in Montreal, I am lucky to have a variety of news outlets with a variety of opinions reporting on the crisis in Lebanon. It's because of this that I am increasingly alarmed about how these events are being portrayed in the United States. It's so Ironic that this nation, once believed to be the Mecca of democracy is now being infiltrated by propaganda.

The following clip from Democracy Now explains how "America is watching a different war then the rest of the world"

parts 2 and 3 can be viewed Here and Here

Ignorant Ass of the Day

Recently I was browsing Youtube.com for clips on the Lebanon/Israeli conflict and I kept coming across commentary from Bill O'Reilly. OH MY GOD this guy is such an ass.......my head feels like it's going to explode just listening to him!!! Anyway here's today's ignorant ass of the day:

BILL O'REILLY

As most of you probably know Bill is the host of the O'Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel. Here's a rundown of some of his views....brought to you of course by Wikipedia

Believes if the "forces of secularism" go unchecked, "they will destroy America as we know." it"

Opposes publicly funded medicine beyond what he considers a necessary "safety net"

Supports what he calls "coerced interrogation," at Guantanamo Bay, which he agrees some people would characterize "torture"

Supports intelligent design being discussed in science classes in public schools

Opposes the expansion job security and entitlement programs believing they undermine ambition

Supports the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy and opposes openly declared homosexuals in the military

What bothers me the most about this guy is that half the time he cannot even make a clear concise argument, but instead completely goes off the deep end, insulting the speaker and not giving any logical reasoning for his objections. This is nicely pointed out in the following clip.....

i really hate this guy
